Most business education is built for 19-year-olds with nothing but time on their hands. We built ours for the assistant manager doing coursework at 11pm after her kids are asleep, and for the guy running a lawn care business out of his truck who needs to actually understand cash flow — not read a case study about someone else’s.
That gap is the whole reason 21st Century ABE exists. Community colleges are fine at a lot of things, but they were never built around a working adult’s schedule, and for a long time nobody bothered to fix that.
In 2016, a handful of us — working professionals and educators, several of whom were juggling night classes ourselves — got tired of watching capable adults get shut out of programs that didn’t fit their lives. So we put together something that did: education tied to real business problems, priced and scheduled for people who already have a job, not people preparing to get one. It started small. It didn’t stay that way, mostly because the need turned out to be bigger than we’d guessed.
Today we work with adult learners and small business owners who’ve stopped waiting for permission to grow. Some are building a business on the side. Some are trying to move up without quitting what pays the bills. The obstacles are almost always the same three: no time, curricula written for a different audience, and price tags that don’t make sense once you’re already covering rent and daycare. We work on all three — through partnerships with local organizations, and by putting more of the program online where that actually helps instead of just sounding modern.
