The Indian government will begin using artificial intelligence to assess the condition of rural roads, replacing manual inspections with GPS-enabled dashcam footage under its e-MARG system.

Rohit Kansal, secretary of the rural development ministry, stated AI will classify road stretches as “good,” “fair,” or “poor” based on video surveys. The technology will operate alongside human oversight to maintain accountability during an initial testing phase.

The move seeks to improve transparency and asset management for rural roads, which have expanded quickly under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY). Since its launch in 2000, the program has built 800,000 kilometers of roads, shifting focus from construction to maintenance.

Kansal explained this integration of technology with engineering oversight will strengthen accountability and life-cycle management. Authorities now aim to monitor conditions more regularly using data to spot defects early and cut long-term costs.

PMGSY received ₹19,000 crore for the 2026-27 fiscal year, a 73% increase over the previous year’s revised estimate. The funding boost reflects the program’s broader emphasis on upkeep rather than new projects.

e-MARG, the electronic system tracking rural road maintenance, will add AI-driven dashcam surveys and machine-based defect recognition. Standardized road coding will enable consistent monitoring and better data collection.

The change isn’t merely about replacing inspectors with cameras. It involves automating workflows—from defect detection to repair assignment and follow-up verification. When a dashcam spots a pothole, an AI agent could assign the repair to a contractor and track progress until the same camera confirms completion.

Vikram R Singh, founder of Antier Solutions, noted the approach may significantly reduce the time between reporting and repairing damage. “Cameras and machines can report issues, and an automated system assigns tasks while tracking progress until resolved,” he said.

The government’s push for better rural road maintenance extends beyond infrastructure.

Officials believe improved connectivity can strengthen local economies by expanding market access for agricultural and non-farm products. Better roads also mean faster access to education and healthcare, especially in remote areas.

Timely repairs may create jobs, both directly through construction and indirectly by supporting rural businesses. Shifting to data-driven maintenance could lower long-term costs by addressing problems before they escalate.

Experts say embedding transparency and technology in road management could enhance riding quality and extend infrastructure lifespan. Moving from isolated records to digitally mapped, continuously monitored roads marks a broader reform in public infrastructure governance.

An official stated periodic maintenance of rural roads can boost the rural economy and trade. The objective is a system where data, evidence, and intelligent oversight work together to sustain connectivity over time.
