The Indian government is considering incentives worth over $1 billion to encourage private-sector adoption of electric buses and trucks, in an effort to reduce fossil-fuel use amid a deepening energy crisis.
Energy Crisis Prompts Action
According to people familiar with the matter, the program would span a decade and target India’s largely privately owned commercial vehicle fleet, with the biggest share likely earmarked for inter-city bus operators.
The government is accelerating efforts to cut fossil-fuel dependence after supply disruptions linked to the West Asia crisis revived concerns about energy security and imported inflation.
India relies on imports for nearly 90 per cent of its crude oil needs, making it vulnerable to geopolitical shocks and price volatility.
Electrification of Commercial Transport
Electrifying commercial transport would also help tackle India’s severe air-pollution problem, with vehicular emissions accounting for as much as 40 per cent of fine particulate matter pollution annually in cities such as New Delhi.
Electric bus adoption has grown rapidly over the past five years, driven largely by state-run transportation companies, yet most newly registered buses in India still run on diesel.
While diesel dependence is not unique to India, other regions are moving faster on commercial-fleet electrification, with China already running hundreds of thousands of electric trucks and buses.
The US and Europe are also rapidly electrifying urban logistics and public-transport fleets.
Private Sector Involvement
India has more than 2 million buses on the road, but the government controls only about 5 per cent of the fleet, according to estimates cited in the discussions.
Nearly all trucks — the country’s biggest diesel users — are privately operated, and officials are looking at ways to spur adoption among smaller commercial fleet operators.
These operators have struggled with the high upfront costs and limited financing, according to the people familiar with the matter.
Meetings with the Prime Minister’s Office and industry stakeholders are expected this month to refine the plan, which is still being worked out and may change.
They are still determining the final budget allocation, vehicles eligible for incentives, and subsidy structure.

Electrifying commercial transport would not only reduce India’s reliance on fossil fuels but also help mitigate the country’s severe air-pollution problem.
It continues to be a major concern, and the adoption of electric buses and trucks could play a significant role in reducing emissions.
With other countries making rapid progress in commercial-fleet electrification, India is under pressure to keep pace and reduce its dependence on diesel, similar to how Bharti Airtel has seen growth in its stock.
The proposed incentives are seen as a crucial step towards achieving this goal, and the government is expected to announce more details about the program in the coming months, which will also impact the energy security of the region.
