
Rolls-Royce is set to begin ground testing of the propulsion system for the future GCAP combat aircraft. The Japon, Italie, and Royaume-Uni are collaborating on a sixth-generation fighter jet expected to be operational by 2035.
The development of the new core engine is still underway, while modified EJ200 engines will enable flight tests.
The Global Combat Air Programme is a joint initiative between the three countries to produce a sixth-generation manned fighter. The aircraft is expected to replace the F-2 in Japan, and the Eurofighter Typhoon in Italy and the UK.
A trilateral government authority in the UK oversees the program, with industrial implementation handled by a joint venture between Leonardo, BAE Systems, and Japan Aircraft Industrial Enhancement Co. They are working together to achieve this goal.
The program’s development follows an international approach, with each country contributing a leading engine manufacturer. The recent completion of design evaluations marks the transition from independent national research to a common demonstration model.
During this integrated phase, technological contributions from each country will be assessed to form a cohesive system. IHI Corporation, Avio Aero, and Rolls-Royce are developing the propulsion system jointly, building on their expertise.
The demonstration engine is based on technological advancements from the Orpheus international program. By applying flexible engineering and rapid development methods from this project, the partners aim to refine the technology and minimize development risks, ensuring a smooth process.
Ground tests are upcoming. The primary objective is to collect essential data to stabilize the development project. In parallel, Rolls-Royce is providing two adapted EJ200 engines for the British demonstration prototype as part of the Future Combat Air System.
These engines, originally developed for the Eurofighter Typhoon, will enable the demonstration aircraft to fly while engineers continue developing the new generation of engines. The aircraft is currently being assembled at Warton in Lancashire by a team consisting of the UK Ministry of Defence, BAE Systems, MBDA, and Rolls-Royce, working together.
Team Tempest reports that around 90% of the aircraft’s total weight has been completed, with over 11,500 parts designed and half of the primary structure now in final assembly, marking significant progress.
The GCAP program, created in December 2022, aims to produce a manned sixth-generation fighter, with the aircraft expected to enter service around 2035. This collaborative effort between Japan, Italy, and the UK will play a significant role in shaping the future of combat aircraft, and defense hub development.
